Cordell r. Kirby — also known as ameer-hassan mateen — was killed in des moines, iowa, on august 2, 1999. Kirby, while incarcerated at the iowa state penitentiary in december 1980, was a member of the islamic faith and one of seven appellees who filed a complaint pursuant to 42 u.S.C. § 1983, alleging numerous claims against officials of the penitentiary for violation of the inmates’ rights to exercise their religion. The inmates sought money damages and injunctive relief.
