On october 17, 1996, witnesses reported seeing two male transients argue near the corner of se 3rd and ash street at approximately 7:20 pm. One of the transients pulled out a handgun and shot and killed the victim, 29-year-old clayton cobenais, an american indian. Clayton was a known transient and heavy drinker who was reported to engage in fist fights when intoxicated. Witnesses described the other transient as a white male, 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches, slender with short brown hair and an unshaven face. The transient was wearing a dark blue jacket with blue jeans.
