On wednesday night, june 27, 1917, thecla m. Gerken of woonsocket, south dakota, was shot and killed while out for a walk with a friend in sioux city, iowa. Gerken, 23, was accompanying miss mabel houlihan, 922 ninth street, on a walk, and the girls walked arm in arm up jones street. Gerken was staying at the home of dr. H.H.
