Duane ewers, a retired anesthesiologist from southern california and avid hiker, traveled to mount charleston to hike to the summit with the suspect. Ewers and the suspect were seen hiking the trail after dark. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots at approximately 1:00 a.M. Several people saw the suspect before and after the murder. The suspect tried to drag ewers into the wooded area near the trail, because of the loose footing the suspect abandoned his efforts and fled. Ewers vehicle was reported missing from the parking area at the trail head. The vehicle was recovered several months later in the parking garage at the treasure island hotel.Agency
