On january 10, 2002, officers were called to the apartment building at the 1600 block of newark street on the report of two men down with gunshot wounds. Carlos guerrero-castilla died at the scene. The other victim was shot in the stomach but survived. Witness statements vary. It appears the victims were in a confrontation with two to five males, believed to be black, in the rear of the apartment building. At some point a tire iron was utilized to strike the victim's car. Several shots were fired and the victim was struck. The suspect(s) responsible for the death of carlos guerrero-castilla have yet to be identified.
