On october 19, 2000, at approximately 7:20 pm, laraye lewis, a 25-year-old african-american man, and a friend were sitting on a bench outside the caritas plaza at 2830 n. Williams avenue when an unidentified man began firing several shots in their direction. Both ducked, but laraye was hit and died at the scene. Laraye lewis was reported to be involved in the use and sale of drugs. The shooter has been described as being an african-american man wearing dark clothing and a black baseball cap.
