At approximately 7:20 pm on may 2, 1989, an unidentified white male transient alerted a café employee near the intersection of se 2nd and oak street that there was a deceased person on the railroad tracks. Police were called and found the victim, melvin longie, a 51-year-old american indian, deceased on the railroad tracks on the 100 block of se oak street. An autopsy revealed that mr. Longie had died from multiple stab wounds. Melvin longie was a known transient and had a record relating to “transient” type crimes. Several witnesses reported that a white man, approximately 35 years of age, had stated that he had killed a man in the days following mr. Melvin being murdered.
