Info

On may 10, 1970, avery roy shipman was driving in aloha with his wife and mother in the car just before dusk. He was eastbound on highway 8 when a brown 1964 chevrolet station wagon cut them off on the road and would not let them pass. The chevy driver eventually pulled his vehicle over to the fog line and mr. Shipman pulled over in front of him. Shipman got out of his car to go talk to the suspect. As he walked to the rear of his vehicle, the station wagon driver suddenly accelerated from a stop and struck shipman, who died at the scene of his injuries. The vehicle left traveling east (toward beaverton) with two occupants inside. While detectives were at the scene, a witness approached. He said his name was charles cromwell, and that he was in the car with the suspect when he ran over mr. Shipman. Cromwell said he had hitched a ride from hillsboro with the suspect. He did not know the driver’s name, but he witnessed everything. Cromwell said the suspect pulled over to let him out near st. Mary’s home for boys, where he worked as a counselor. The victim pulled over in front of him and rapidly approached the vehicle. The driver told cromwell to “hang on” just before accelerating and running down shipman. He described the suspect vehicle as a grey chevrolet station wagon driven by a male 19-22 years of age, with brown wavy hair and sideburns, wearing blue levi jeans and a white shirt. After striking the victim, the suspect traveled east on highway 8. Cromwell said he jumped from the vehicle as it slowed to turn right onto sw 145th. A second witness said he saw shipman get run over and he gave chase, following the suspect east on highway 8, then turning south on sw 145th. He lost the vehicle near scholls ferry road. He said the vehicle was a turquoise 1964 chevrolet station wagon with two taillights, one on each side. He did not see anyone jump from the vehicle as it approached murray boulevard. Avery roy shipman lived in hillsboro at the time of his death, but he was laid to rest in the st. Francis catholic cemetery in roy, a community southeast of banks, oregon.
