In the early morning of september 3, 1983, at approximately 3:10 am, derreck sherman, a 17-year-old african-american male, was walking across the parking lot of the knickerbocker motel on the 4700 block on n interstate avenue with an associate when a loud noise was heard. The associate looked over to derreck to see him on the ground bleeding from a gunshot. Derreck was transported to emanuel hospital where he died a short time later. Derreck sherman had led a trying life and was living in a foster home at the time of his murder. The day before his death he played basketball, went to a party, had gone downtown, and returned to the motel to sleep. An unidentified white male was seen a short time prior to the shooting. He was described as 18 to 23 years of age, being 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall with sandy brown hair and a mustache wearing an army fatigue jacket with blue jeans. Witnesses reported seeing a yellow 1979 chevrolet camaro fleeing the scene. WAgency
