On june 14, 1984, two individuals at the waterfront near the intersection of nw davis and front avenue (now naito parkway) spotted someone floating in the river at approximately 3:30 pm. A nearby portland fire station was contacted and both police and fire responded to the scene. They discovered that the victim, richard tauriainen, a 53-year-old white man, was deceased. An autopsy revealed that he had died as the result of traumatic injuries. Richard tauriainen was a veteran of the korean war which had affected him enough to become transient and lose contact with his family. He has been described as balding with a full mustache and graying beard at the time of his death.
