Info

On September 9, 1972, at 0430 hours, Officer Fred Early was off duty driv- ing his private vehicle near the intersection of National and Sawtelle Boule vards. At the northwest corner of this intersection, the officer observed a possible burglary suspect loitering near the Thrifty Drug Store. He observed the suspect for several minutes, then circled and parked his vehicle in the service station at the southwest corner of the intersection to keep the suspect under surveillance. The officer attempted to call for police assistance from the pay phone on the service station lot. He was talking to the operator when the suspect, ap- parently alarmed by a vehicle which stopped nearby, ran southbound across National Boulevard. Officer Early immediately ran in pursuit of the suspect prior to completing the call for assistance. He pursued the suspect west- bound to an extremely dark parking lot at the rear of 11316 National Boulevard. Upon entering the parking lot, the officer was attacked by one or more additional suspects and was shot twice through the left leg. The officer fired one shot from his service revolver at the suspect who was still running across the parking lot. He could not see the other suspects and was unable to determine how many attacked him. Officer Early died as a result of injuries suffered in this incident on March 23, 1973, at 1304 hours. The Los Angeles Police Protective League and the State of California are offering $10,000 each, totaling $20,000, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this crime. Suspect: Male, unknown descent, dark hair, 6', thin build, 20 30 years old, shoulder-length hair, dark clothing. NFD on other suspects.
