Milwaukee Home Security Advice

Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin. With a population just over half a million people, the city was once known as a brewing and manufacturing giant. With the decline of both industries Milwaukee has added some major additions to the city including many new skyscrapers, condos, lofts and apartments. Unfortunately, even with the new improvements, the city has had its trouble with crime and gang activity.

Robberies are one of the most prevalent crimes in the city. Luckily, with a few minor changes you can reduce your risk of being targeted. Whether you live in the city or suburbs of Milwaukee these safety tips are applicable for every home.

In a majority of break-ins a burglar will try the doors and windows of a home first. In fact, the FBI reported that nearly 33% of all burglaries are unlawful entry, not forced. This means a burglar was able to enter a home through an unlocked door or window. This makes it very important to properly lock your doors and windows before you leave your home. It’s also a good idea to keep doors locked even while the home is occupied to ensure your safety.

Some brazen burglars will knock on your door before trying to break-in. They do this for two reasons: to see if the home is occupied, or to gain access to it later. These kinds of burglars will pose as salesman or repairman to enter your home. While inside they may leave a window unlocked or see where your valuables are located. To avoid this never answer the door for someone you don’t know.

Another way to deter burglars from targeting your home is with landscaping. By trimming shrubs on the perimeter of your home you’ll take away a burglar’s ability to hide from you and your neighbors. Also, by placing thorny and prickly bushes near windows you’ll help keep a burglar’s first floor options limited for entry.

For extra security a home alarm system is a good investment. Be sure to choose a reputable company who has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau. It’s important to take your time and do your research. First, access your Milwaukee home security needs then decide which kind of system would work best for your home and family. This is one of the most secure ways to keep your home protected.
