Home Safety Advice for Oklahoma

Oklahoma City is the capital of Oklahoma and the largest city in the state. It is home to over half a million residents and the largest livestock market in the world. Over the years the city has also struggled with increasing drug use. As a result, many large gangs like the Bloods, Crips, and South Side Locos have been actively violent in the area. Drug-related crime, shootings and robberies have plagued Oklahoma City for years.

Local residents can keep their homes protected with simple security improvements. Whether you live in the city or the suburbs a home security system is always reliable. Wireless security is the perfect fit for any home and the technology is superior to traditional hard-wired systems. The best systems should provide multiple layers of backup protection and withstand a home invasion.

While adding alarm security is a great investment there are other security precautions you can take to increase your home’s security. The three l’s are essential: locks, lighting and landscaping. Strong and properly installed locks are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to keep burglars out. The most common entry point in a residential burglary is through a first floor door, followed by the windows and then the garage. It’s very important to have good locks on these entry points and keep them secured - even if you’re only running out for 10 minutes. With the average residential burglary costing homeowner’s $2,119, an unsecured lock could be a costly mistake.

Lighting is another great burglary deterrent. While 2/3 of residential burglaries take place during the day that still means over 700,000 took place at night. Since burglars try very hard not to be seen or heard, lighting is an effective way to derail their plans. By installing motion lights on the exterior of your home you’re likely to scare a burglar away before they even try to break-in.

Last, landscaping is a simple but effective way to keep your home protected. Thorny bushes strategically placed near first floor windows are great. They not only take away hiding places but they also deter burglars from approaching that entrance. Keeping your hedges trimmed is another way to do this plus it lets neighbors see any suspicious activity going on in or around your home.

Following these Oklahoma City home security tips will keep you and your family more secure. While city crime rates are high, you’ll know you’re taking the necessary precautions to stay safe.
