A Lake Wales mother called 911 Tuesday morning to report she had stabbed her 7-year-old son.
On Tuesday evening, Maisa Alvarez, 42, was in jail and her son was stable after being flown to Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital in Orlando, Lake Wales Deputy Police Chief Troy Schulze said.
The child had at least 10 stab wounds, at least two of them in his arms from defending himself, Schulze said. His hands had been chained together before the attack.
Hospital officials told police that his wounds are not life threatening.
Alvarez was booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder and child abuse.
The mother called 911 at 8:14 a.m., Schulze said.
Alvarez told investigators, with an "almost lost look," that she didn't know why she did it and that she realized what she was doing when her son began to defend himself, Schulze said.
After the attack, she called 911, Schulze said, and was on the phone with dispatchers until shortly after police and emergency personnel arrived at the one-story house at 1062 Highland Crest Circle.
