Incident: Entering Auto/Person Shot
Location: Academy Sports, 1689 Eisenhower Parkway
Date: Tuesday, August 14, 2012, approximately 0200 hours/2:00 a.m.
Precinct 3 officers and a CID detective responded to the Academy Sports parking lot in reference to an Entering Auto case in which the suspect was shot. The officer advised the detective that an Academy Sports employee was leaving the store after completing his shift at approximately 1:00 a.m.
According to the 27 year-old black male employee, he noticed a black male inside his vehicle. As he approached the vehicle he asked the suspect why he was inside. The two men got into a physical altercation and as the suspect exited the vehicle, the employee retrieved his gun and shot him.
A number of items, including the identification of the suspect, 51 year-old Charles Stinson, Jr., were found around the building of Academy Sports where he was last seen fleeing.
MPD officers learned that the suspect had been treated for a gunshot wound to the jaw at Coliseum Northside Hospital. Stinson was transferred and transported to the Medical Center for treatment of the facial wounds he sustained.
The employee has not been charged in the shooting. Charles Stinson, Jr. will be charged with Entering Auto upon his release from the hospital.
This will be his 7th arrest dating back to 1986. He was released from the Bibb LEC most recently on April 19, 2012.
