5300 BLOCK OF SCOTTSVILLE ROAD, CULPEPPER COUNTY, VA
A 22-year-old Culpeper County man faces several charges following a gun-wielding incident in the parking lot of a convenience store Wednesday afternoon.
Dominique Jamaal Newsome, of the 5300 block of Scottsville Road in the Jeffersonton area of the Culpeper County stands charged with felony vandalism and misdemeanor charges of brandishing a firearm and assault.
The incident happened about 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven in the 800 block of North Main Street. Culpeper town police responded to a disturbance call in the parking lot.
A 24-year-old Culpeper man and 21-year-old Charlottesville woman parked their 2011 Dodge Durango rental SUV in the parking area and went inside the store to make a purchase. When they came out, a group of men approached the couple.
Newsome allegedly asked the man if he knew where a particular person might be. The person was supposedly a friend of the man, according to police.
When the man replied that he didn't know where the person could be found, Newsome allegedly kicked the driver's door of the Durango, causing a dent. Newsome then allegedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and broke out the driver's side window. Damage to the Durango was estimated at more than $1,000.
The couple then jumped in the damaged Durango, driving over one of the store's curb bumpers to get away. The couple told police they then drove to Wal-Mart, but the men followed them. At that point, the couple drove to the police station to seek safety.
As the investigation continued, Culpeper County Sheriff's deputies looked for Newsome but couldn't find him.
Later last night, Newsome surrendered at the town police station.
