Shooting - 72XX BLOCK OF BISHOP ROAD, BIRMINGHAM, AL

06/03/2012 12:30 AM.
At around 12:30 am on Sunday June 3, 2012 deputies were dispatched to a shooting in the 7200 block of Bishop Road in McCalla. The 83 year old victim told deputies that he had been lying in his bed when he saw a figure in the darkened hallway. He called out to his wife. The intruder fired one shot that struck him in the shoulder. The victim's car had been broken into before the suspects forced their way into his home. Deputies found a mask that had been left behind by the suspects on the basement stairs of the home. During the ensuing days, detectives employed traditional investigative techniques to develop a pair of suspects. The investigation led detectives to information that one of the suspects had bragged about wearing a similar mask. It was also learned that the pair had fled Jefferson County and were possibly in the area of Orange Beach, AL. Detectives were in the process of coordinating their efforts with the Orange Beach Police Department when the suspects were arrested for a series of thefts in that area. When they were arrested they were driving a truck that had been stolen from Bessemer, AL. Detectives questioned the pair in Orange Beach and they admitted to committing the burglary and shooting in McCalla. 24 year old Danny Harold Mims Jr of Bessemer has been charged with the burglary and shooting as well as a robbery that occurred in the same area a few days earlier. He is believed to be the one who shot the victim. Warrants have been obtained for Mims on charges of Robbery 1st Degree, Burglary 1st Degree and Attempted Murder. His bonds total $180,000. The juvenile is charged with Attempted Murder and Burglary 1st Degree for the burglary and shooting. As these are juvenile cases no bond is set. Each also faces charges in Bessemer and Orange Beach for theft. Both will be transferred to Jefferson County when charges in Orange Beach are resolved. The name of the 14 year old is being withheld due to their juvenile status. Mims and the juvenile are not related. View Source.
